Choosing an Attorney

One of the most difficult and important decisions a person or company makes when either accused of a crime or contemplating ligation is who they select to be their attorney. When going through the hiring process, a person or company needs to understand that their legal issue is a type of problem. Consequently, they are hiring a problem solver.

The most important skill set an attorney should have is the ability to identify the problem. She/He should work with all the parties to find an acceptable solution. Often times, an attorney advertises to “aggressively fight for a person’s rights.” Protracted litigation does not guarantee higher or lower monetary damages. Rather, fighting for the sake of fighting only runs up large attorney fee bills and costs, makes matters unnecessarily complicated, and does not solve the underlying problem.

Consequently, when selecting an attorney, a person or company should place less importance on rhetoric and hourly rates. (A lower hourly rate does not mean the total attorney fees will be less). They should select the attorney who shows an understanding of their needs and demonstrates a willingness to to help them achieve their goals.
